Is it allowed to go into the sea or sauna with a breast prosthesis?
After a breast surgery and fitting a breast prosthesis, the question often arises: what am I actually allowed and not allowed to do? Especially during relaxation — such as swimming in the sea or visiting the sauna — many women want to know if it is safe with a breast prosthesis.
The good news is that in most cases you can simply enjoy water and warmth. However, there are a few points to keep in mind.
Wearing a breast prosthesis in the sea
Most silicone breast prostheses are water-resistant. Sea salt does not directly damage the material. So, in principle, you can safely swim in the sea.
It is important to:
-
wearing a well-fitting prosthesis swimsuit or prosthesis bikini
-
making sure the prosthesis sits securely in the pocket
-
rinsing the prosthesis with clean water after swimming
Salt can dry out the skin, especially if you have also undergone radiation therapy. Therefore, rinse not only the prosthesis but also your skin carefully.
If you swim regularly in the sea, a special swim prosthesis may be more comfortable. It is lighter in weight and dries faster.
In the blog 'how to keep a prosthesis securely in place while swimming', you can find additional information and advice on this topic.
Wearing a breast prosthesis in the swimming pool
Swimming in chlorinated water is usually not a problem either. Afterward, rinse the prosthesis well with lukewarm water and gently pat it dry.
Long-term exposure to chlorine can slightly affect the surface over time, but with normal use, this is not a cause for concern.
What about the sauna?
Heat requires a bit more attention.
A silicone breast prosthesis can handle heat, but prolonged exposure to high temperatures (like in a hot sauna) can eventually affect the material.
In addition, heat can:
-
make the skin more sensitive
-
worsen swelling with lymphedema
-
temporarily change wearing comfort
Many women choose to temporarily remove their breast prosthesis in the sauna. That’s a personal choice. Some women feel comfortable doing so, while others prefer to wear a light solution.
It’s important to listen to your body. If it feels warm or uncomfortable, take a rest.
What if you’ve just had surgery?
If you are still in the early recovery phase, it’s important to get your doctor’s permission before swimming or going to the sauna.
Open wounds, not fully healed scars, or recent radiation require extra caution.
Practical tips
-
Always check that your prosthesis is properly in its cover before entering the water.
-
After swimming or sauna, rinse both the prosthesis and your skin.
-
Let your prosthesis air dry.
-
Avoid extreme heat immediately after breast surgery.
