Article: Which breast prosthesis suits you?

Which breast prosthesis suits you?

After breast surgery, a lot happens. Besides physical recovery, a practical question often arises: which breast prosthesis actually suits my body? The range is larger than many women expect beforehand. There are different shapes, sizes, materials, and wearing options.

The right choice is not just about appearance, but especially about comfort, balance, and how you feel in your own body. In this blog, we guide you step by step in making the right choice.

When do you choose a breast prosthesis?

After a mastectomy, a breast prosthesis can help restore balance in your body. The weight of a breast plays a role in your posture. When this weight is missing on one side, you may unknowingly stand crooked or strain your shoulders differently.

A breast prosthesis can:

  • provide physical balance

  • help with natural posture

  • ensure clothing fits nicely

  • contribute to self-confidence

Some women choose a prosthesis right away, others take more time. Both choices are valid. It’s about what feels comfortable for you.

Step 1: temporary or permanent?

Immediately after surgery, a temporary breast prosthesis is usually worn first. It is lightweight and soft, allowing the scar area to heal without extra pressure.

Only when the breast area is fully healed and swelling has decreased is a definitive silicone breast prosthesis fitted. This has a natural weight and moves with your body.

It is important not to rush these phases. Your body sets the pace.

Step 2: the right shape

Breast prostheses come in various shapes. Which one is suitable depends on your body type and your surgery.

Among others, there are:

  • symmetric models (which can be worn on either side)

  • asymmetric models (specifically for left or right)

  • full breast prostheses

  • partial prostheses (shapers) for partial volume loss

After a breast-conserving surgery, a partial prosthesis may be sufficient to correct asymmetry. After a full mastectomy, a full breast prosthesis is usually appropriate.

The shape should match your natural contours so that the overall look is balanced under clothing.

Step 3: the right weight

The weight of a breast prosthesis is more important than often thought. A prosthesis that is too light may not provide enough balance, while one that is too heavy can feel uncomfortable.

Silicone breast prostheses are designed to closely mimic the natural weight of a breast. This helps support your posture and prevent tension in the shoulders or back.

Some women consciously choose a slightly lighter option, for example with sensitive shoulders or when wearing it for long periods is less comfortable.

Step 4: size and fit

The right size breast prosthesis is essential. A prosthesis that is too small can show visible differences in clothing, while one that is too large can look unnatural.

When determining the right size, the following are considered:

  • your current bra size

  • the shape of your rib cage

  • the other breast (if present)

  • your personal preference

A well-fitting prosthesis should lie stable in a prosthesis bra and must not shift during movement.

Step 5: combine with the right bra

A breast prosthesis works best in a well-fitting prosthesis bra. These bras have integrated pockets where the prosthesis is safely placed.

An ordinary bra often provides insufficient stability. A prosthesis bra offers:

  • secure positioning

  • even pressure distribution

  • extra comfort for sensitive skin

  • a natural shape under clothing

The combination of the right breast prosthesis and a suitable bra ultimately makes the biggest difference.

Different brands, different features

Within the range of breast prostheses, there are specialized brands such as Amoena, Anita Care, and ABC Breast Care. Each brand has its own characteristics in terms of shape, weight, and material.

What feels good for you?

The right breast prosthesis is not just a technical choice. It is also a personal decision. How do you want to feel in your clothing? Are you looking for maximum symmetry or a subtle balance? Do you want the most natural possible weight or prefer a lighter option?

Your comfort comes first. What is ideal for one woman may feel less comfortable for another.
