How long should you wear a bra after a mastectomy?
After a mastectomy, everything focuses on recovery. Your body needs time to heal, and you want to support the area as well as possible. Many women are therefore advised to wear a bra — but how long is that actually necessary?
The answer depends on the type of surgery, your recovery, and the advice of your treating physician. In this blog, we explain what is common and what to watch for.
The first weeks after surgery
Immediately after a mastectomy, a postoperative bra or compression bra is usually recommended. This bra:
-
provides light to moderate support
-
helps reduce swelling
-
supports the wound area
-
provides stability when moving
In the first weeks, it is often advised to wear this bra day and night, unless your doctor indicates otherwise.
On average, this phase lasts about 4 to 6 weeks, but this varies per person.
Why is support important?
After a mastectomy, the breast area can be sensitive. There may also be swelling or a pulling sensation around the scar.
A well-fitting bra:
-
prevents unnecessary movement
-
reduces tension on the scar
-
provides a safe and stable feeling
-
supports your posture
Especially if you have kept one breast, a bra helps create balance.
When can you sleep without a bra at night?
In the first weeks after surgery, it is usually recommended to wear a supportive bra at night as well. This gives rest to the operated area.
Over time — when the wound is fully healed and swelling has decreased — you can often sleep without a bra again, if that feels comfortable.
Listen carefully to your body. If it feels better with light support, you can certainly choose to continue that longer.
And when you start wearing a breast prosthesis?
When you switch from a postoperative bra to a prosthesis bra, the situation changes slightly.
If you wear a breast prosthesis, a well-fitting prosthesis bra during the day is important for:
-
stability
-
correct positioning
-
balance in posture
At night, some women choose to remove the prosthesis and possibly wear a soft comfort bra.
Is it mandatory to always wear a bra?
No. There is no fixed rule that you must wear a bra for life after a mastectomy.
Support is important during the initial recovery period. After that, you can decide what feels comfortable. Some women feel more confident with a bra, others sometimes choose not to wear one at home.
The most important thing is that the bra does not put pressure on the scar and feels comfortable.
When should you be extra careful?
Take extra time and consult your doctor when:
-
you still have swelling
-
lymphedema is present
-
you are undergoing radiation therapy
-
the scar is still sensitive
In these situations, longer support may be desirable.
Support that fits your phase
At Mamma Nova, we offer postoperative bras, compression bras, and prosthesis bras specially developed for women after breast surgery.
The duration of wearing depends on your recovery. What is necessary in the first weeks can later mainly be a matter of comfort.
Your body often indicates what feels best. Support should help — but never pinch or force.
